Main board listed Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) is the
leading newspaper publisher in Singapore, with one of the region's
most advanced printing assets. It is licensed to publish 14 newspapers
in the four official languages, and over 90 periodicals. Everyday,
SPH newspapers reach 2.7 million individuals, or 83 per cent of
persons above 15 years old.
In addition to its core business as a newspaper and magazine publisher,
SPH provides Internet portal services with online news and e-commerce
facilities through its Internet arm, SPH Internet Business. It operates
two radio stations, Radio 100.3 FM in Chinese and Radio 91.3 FM in
English, under SPH UnionWorks Pte Ltd.
Expanding into property investment, SPH acquired Paragon and Promenade
and amalgamated them into a single development, Paragon a
prime shopping complex and commercial building in the heart of Orchard
Road. SPH is also developing Sky@eleven, a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium on its former Times Industrial Building at Thomson Road. The company also holds stakes in mobile telecommunications
service provider, MobileOne (M1).

With some 1,000 journalists including correspondents in 16 overseas
bureaux, SPH is well equipped with the talent and network to deliver
quality news and information content that covers both domestic and
international markets. Its stable of 14 broadsheets and tabloids
caters to the wide-ranging demographics of Singapore's multi-ethnic
population, while its periodicals appeal to the lifestyle needs
of consumers.

Through its comprehensive range of core newspaper and periodical
products, SPH enjoys continued dominance in the advertising market,
holding more than 50 per cent share of the country's total advertising
expenditure. Moreover, circulation of SPH newspapers continues to
show growth despite the increasing popularity of the Internet.
The success of SPH is built on the strong history of its two flagship
newspapers: The Straits Times, the English daily which has been
in publication for 160 years, and Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese daily
started in 1983 from the merger of Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew
Jit Poh, which dates back to 1923. Lianhe Zaobao is the trusted
information provider for the Chinese-speaking community.
The other two dailies, Berita Harian and Tamil Murasu, remain the
staple for Malay and Indian readers respectively. And in keeping
with the times, these newspapers are now available on the Internet.
Its online versions are known as The Straits Times Interactive,
Zaobao.com, cyBerita and Tamil Murasu Online. Other Internet editions
of SPH newspapers are: The Electric New Paper and The Business Times
Online Edition.
Over the years, SPH editors and journalists have continued to upgrade
and modify the newspapers to meet the dynamic lifestyle changes
of readers.
A new chapter in SPH journalism began in 2002 when for the first
time, the English and Chinese newsrooms moved in together to operate
under one roof at SPH's new headquarters, News Centre at Toa Payoh
North. This unprecedented move drives the integration of content
creation and delivery for multiple media platforms and promises
round-the-clock continuous news delivery across these platforms.
With more than S$500 million in printing assets, SPH prints all
its newspapers and its state-of-the-art printing facilities are
capable of providing up to 65 per cent colour pages for any newspaper
edition. SPH also prints regional editions of international newspapers
like Asahi Shimbun, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune
Contributions to the Community
As a good corporate citizen, SPH fulfills its social responsibility
by helping to build a better nation through its support for community
programmes in the areas of arts and culture, education, sports and
charity. For its active role in the arts scene over the years, SPH
has been awarded the Distinguished Patron of the Arts every year since 1993.
The NAC-SPH Golden Point Awards, Singapore Writers' Festival, Chinese
Cultural Festival, TheatreWorks' Writers'
Lab and SPH Schools' Relay Championships are some of the other programmes
that SPH actively supports.
SPH supports wildlife conservation efforts through the adoption
of endangered animals like Inuka, the polar bear, and the SPH Conservation
Centre, where a family of rare proboscis monkeys is housed and bred,
at the Singapore Zoo. Other adoptions by SPH include the Caribbean
flamingos, and Samson, the golden eagle, at the Jurong BirdPark.
SPH also sponsors the All Star BirdShow at the BirdPark. A must-see
at the park, the talented birds never fail to entertain visitors
with their outstanding performance.
