Scholars don't necessarily make good entrepreneurs

Apr 9, 2007
The Business Times

Going for technology:
Can Singapore create a new generation of SMEs based on technology? What else needs to be done to raise the level of Singapore's SME sector?

A LOT of SMEs are started by entrepreneurs and not by trained scholars and academicians with management training. Most entrepreneurs are generally risk takers to some extent and they are prepared to succeed at all costs, as most of them do not have a plan B. I question the ability of trained scholars to be able to similarly take such risks, especially as they have already invested so much time and money in their academic pursuits. Understanding the risks of the industry and its peculiarities cannot be derived from books but must be acquired through years of hard work and immersion in the industry.
