The recent events in London serve as a reminder that the terrorist threat has not abated at all. Rather, it continues to warn us that we should constantly be mindful of its existence. On its part, governments should continue to stay vigilant and tighten customs and border controls. More importantly, governments should also instill a sense of heightened alertness and awareness among its citizens without being too alarmist. Citizens should be educated on the terrorist threat and be informed on what to do when such a situation arises. In this regard, mass civil defence and anti-terrorist exercises can be conducted regularly, both in the busy central business district and in the heartlands.
As an individual, one must accept that life post 9/11 will never be the same again. Everyone should be more tolerant and understanding of the inconveniences and delays that arise as a result of measures undertaken to reduce the terrorist threat. Both individuals and businesses can do their part by being active participants during mass civil defence exercises. Employers can also invite civil defence volunteers to hold talks in their premises for their employees. Everyone can play their small part. It will not eradicate the terrorist threat but it will go a long way to prepare us if such a situation arises.
