Risk averse or risk savvy?
Are we entering a period of heightened risk aversion by investors? Could this, coupled with other risks, have serious economic consequences, including for Singapore?

THE macroeconomic situation will definitely affect Singapore as the country adopts an open economic policy towards foreign direct investment. However, one cannot only look at the negative aspects and conclude with the Chicken Little mentality that the sky is falling. While considerable risks remain in emerging markets, there are also plenty of opportunities for the enterprising ones.
As was pointed out in the recent Singapore Budget, we are preparing for challenges that may come along in the coming three to five years. The integrated resorts for instance were a bold but necessary move to rejuvenate the Singapore economy as we move from a manufacturing-based economy to a services-based one. This demonstrates the readiness of Singapore as it prepares itself for potential spillover effects due to global market trends.
Hence, as we have always preached at Best World, we should not be overly paranoid with what we cannot control, but constantly improve and upgrade ourselves for the opportunities ahead. In this way, we can control our own destiny.
