Impact of the Democratic swing
What does the swing in the US mid-term elections mean for America and the world? In particular, how could this affect international trade and business?

ONE should not over-dramatise the magnitude of Republican losses in the 2006 US Congressional election. The president's party in Congress almost always loses ground in mid-term elections, which has been the case since the end of World War Two. The winning party bears the responsibility for shoring up confidence among businessmen in America and around the world, by providing viable means of increasing competitiveness and ensuring sufficient stability to attract and develop investment activities in the economy.
The present outlook is uncertain. It remains to be seen whether the Democratic Party is able to take steps to create a base on which the country can build for future growth. Only then will the country's future become clearer.
